Courtney Moses, the 5’ 7” Oak Hill point guard who averaged 31.7 points a game this season and led the Golden Eagles to a pair of Class 2A state runner-up finishes, has been named 2010 Indianapolis Star Indiana Miss Basketball.
Moses earned 106 votes from media and coaches around the state in winning the award, more than double the total of runner-up Dee Dee Williams of Ben Davis (52). Tabitha Gerardot of Fort Wayne Canterbury finished third with 21 votes.
Moses, a Purdue recruit and one of two future Boilermakers on this year’s 14-player Indiana All-Star Team, will lead the Hoosier girls into their two-day battle with Kentucky June 11 at Bellarmine University in Louisville and June 12 at Conseco Fieldhouse (or whatever’s it’s gonna be called then) in Indianapolis.
In four seasons at the Converse, Swayzee, and Sweetser consolidation near Marion in Grant County, Moses set 27 game, season, or career records. She ended her career as the school leader with 1,956 points, 577 assists, and 158 3-pointers as Oak Hill went 97-9 and finished as 2A runner-up to Heritage Christian in Moses’ sophomore and junior seasons.
Five All-Stars played on state championship teams this year, including Williams (the other Purdue commit) and teammate Demetria Nunley-Lash (IUPUI), winners of back-to-back 4A state titles at BD.
Katy McIntosh (University of Indianapolis) played for 2A state champ Austin, Gerardot (Valparaiso) led the Cavaliers to the 1A crown, and Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran’s Andrea Newbauer (Indiana) played for the 3A champion Cadets.
Rushville coach Melissa Marlow was named head coach of the All-Star Team after leading the Lions to the 3A state finals in her 10th year (137-97 in that span).
Marlow will be assisted by Stephanie Keller (133-85 in 10 seasons coaching at Indianapolis Arlington) and fifth-year Merrillville mentor Amy Govert (87-27), whose Pirates made it to the 4A state championship game.
The team has only one player, 6’ 3” Butler recruit Sarah Hamm of Winchester, taller than 6’ 1”.
“We were looking for athletic kids who could get out and defend on the perimeter,” former Kokomo coach and second-year game director Charlie Hall told the Indianapolis Star. “I’ve watched so many (All-Star Games) over the years, and that’s the style you’re usually going to face when you play Kentucky.”
